US Film and TV Productions Deterred by Prolonged Strikes and High Costs

Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra has emphasized that the impact of last year’s Hollywood strikes on the US film and television industry is "far more severe" than has been acknowledged. Vinciquerra made this comment during a keynote speech at the Mipcom programme market in Cannes.

The length of the actors’ and writers’ strikes, as well as their renewed contract terms, has reportedly forced productions out of the US. According to Vinciquerra, "We tried to talk to the unions about what we thought would happen," he said, "and now it’s happening – it is pushing production out of the US."

Attractive international tax incentives have lured productions outside the US, with the cost of crews significantly less in countries such as Australia, England, and Eastern Europe. By comparison, California "just hasn’t responded to what’s going on in the world," Vinciquerra noted, adding that the state’s high cost of doing business makes it difficult to price out a film. While there are many TV productions in California, there are not as many big-budget films.

A Chaotic Future Ahead for US Studios

The next 18-24 months are expected to be "very chaotic" for US studios grappling with the decline of legacy cable channels. Vinciquerra believes that there will be a shake-out, with mergers, consolidation, sales, or even bankruptcies potentially occurring. Sony, which sold off or closed most of its cable channels as part of a company restructure six years ago, has benefited from this approach, providing stability for the studio.

Vinciquerra’s Future Plans

Vinciquerra announced last month that he will step down as CEO of Sony in January 2025, with Ravi Ahuja, Sony’s chairman of global television studios, taking over as his successor. The outgoing executive has expressed plans to return to private equity, having stayed on at Sony longer than initially intended due to the impact of Covid-19 and the strikes.
