Picture Adam Sandler, and you’ll also be imagining his signature wardrobe—a casual collection of T-shirts, hoodies, athletic shorts, and sneakers. The comedian wears his same casual, comfortable clothes everywhere he goes, even sporting them at the Oscars—at least in brief comedic bits. He’s so associated with this style that it’s got its very own name: Sandlercore.
His wife, Jackie, meanwhile, knows how to dress up when the occasion calls for it—as seen during the recent New York premiere of Sandler’s latest film, Happy Gilmore 2. At the event, the actor was interviewed about his wardrobe. A People reporter told Sandler that his wife “said she’s so proud of you, but that you take up way too much room in the closet with your shoes.” Sandler was not surprised to hear that: “She did say that. Yeah, I know. That makes sense,” he replied.
Sandler’s sartorial choices are a topic of conversation more often than you’d think. In a recent video for Complex, an interviewer asked how he felt about unintentionally becoming a style icon. “It’s funny as hell,” Sandler answered. Whenever one of his children or a friend of theirs talks to him about it, he added, Jackie always has the same reaction: “What the hell are we talking about right now? How did that happen?”
Beyond his shoes taking up too much space, the actor added, Jackie has never had a problem with the way he dresses—always defending him, even when he’s been criticized by those who feel his outfits are inappropriate for more formal occasions. “He’s comfortable like that,” Jackie would reply, according to Sandler. “Let him do what he wants.” After all, that is the secret of Sandlercore: feeling at home anywhere and in any situation.
