“Are you real?” “I think so…” Lost in a place that is no more… Watch the official trailer for an intriguing indie film shot in Pennsylvania titled I Want to Live on Mars, which is already available to watch via digital now. The film is directed by a Ukrainian filmmaker named Mariya Somova who now lives in the US. Two unlikely friends embark on a journey to escape life in a ghost town devastated by disaster. The film was inspired by Centralia, a ghost town in Pennsylvania. Its current population is 5 due to a coal mine fire that is still burning. An homage to what it’s like being a teenage girl, and living in the middle of nowhere with no opportunity or any real way of expressing yourself. “As a filmmaker, I really wanted to explore the aspect of loneliness and emptiness in the human heart, as well as the people, and the environment in which these individuals immerse themselves. In broad strokes, two newborn women (Pickles, very rural, and Breezy, very urban) are brought together by the mistakes or the circumstances of their guardians beyond their control. After months of prickly, unlikely friendship, and a series of poetically unexpected events, the two strike out on their own, leaving behind whatever scraps they had in exurban Pennsylvania in search of “Life on Mars.” I Want to Live on Mars was inspired by Centralia, a borough and ghost town in Pennsylvania. Its population has declined from 1,000 in 1980 to only five residents in 2023 due to a coal mine fire that has been burning constantly beneath the borough since 1962. I Want to Live on Mars is both written and directed by Ukrainian indie filmmaker Mariya Somova, her second feature film after directing Fail previously. Produced by Anderson Boyd, Mark Ezovski, Matti Leinikka, Anna Robles, Frederick Shaibani, Mark Solari, Gabriel Theis, Justin Thomas.
