Ezra Miller was a rising star before a string of controversial behavior—including accusations of assault, grooming, theft, and disturbing behavior in Iceland, Hawaii, and Vermont—stopped their career in its tracks in 2022. It was a intricate and troubled phase that kept the actor out of the public eye for three years. But now, Miller seems ready to return to the spotlight.
After an appearance at Cannes this spring, Miller made another public showing at Filming Italy Sardegna—where they also gave a interview, discussing their recent history and saying they are planning a “tentative” to return to the massive screen. Miller, a nonbinary actor who uses they/them pronouns, said that they’re collaborating on a up-to-date film with Lynne Ramsay, who directed Miller in the title role of We Need to Talk About Kevin.
“I’m working with her again. That will likely be the first thing I do, a film that her and I are writing together,” Miller told Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale. “And I came to Cannes because she asked me to come. If there’s anything I really still believe in in my life, it’s devotion to one’s people, to one’s loved ones…above all else.”
Miller was arrested multiple times in 2022, for disorderly conduct (Miller paid a $500 fine after pleading no contest), assault (Miller was released pending an investigation), and a break-in (Miller pleaded guilty to misdemeanor unlawful trespass). That August, the actor released an apology for their behavior: “I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” Miller said. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe, and productive stage in my life.”
“When you work in this industry, you will find yourself in deep, deep relation with a lot of people who do not give single fuck about you or your well-being at all,” Miller continued in the interview with Lo Speciale Giornale. “Not that I don’t hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things that I did and for a lot of things that happened in that time, but I’m really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss.”
Even before their legal entanglements, Miller stood out for their bold and unconventional red-carpet style. They did the same at Filming Italy Sardegna, appearing alongside Joe Manganiello, Milla-Alexia Gojkovic, and Caitlin O’Connor in a long, blue-striped dress featuring a deep V-neck, asymmetrical brief sleeves, and complete with a neatly knotted bow at the back. They paired the garment with black, square-toe heels, and a watermelon barrette.
