It’s been almost four years since the words ‘James Bond Will Return’ flashed up on cinema screens at the end of No Time To Die — a head scratching promise after the movie’s, er, explosive finale. And yet, while MI6’s finest may not be ready to make his large screen comeback just yet as Amazon MGM Studios acclimatises to being the franchise’s recent custodians, James Bond is returning — in a recent AAA video game, no less. Hailing from stealth specialist Hitman developers IO Interactive, 007 First Light is set to offer a fresh take on Bond’s origin story, following the fledgling spy’s journey from Royal Navy crewman to legendary double-o agent. Check out the action-packed first trailer for the single-player adventure game below;
Okay, so to quickly address the elephant in the room, yes this recent Bond does somehow look like Peter Parker, Nathan Drake, and yet not at all like Tom Holland all at once, with a face that feels American in ways we simply cannot articulate. But a strangely implacable face does nothing to deny the fact this looks like any Bond/spy game aficionado’s dream, a game that could be primed to do for 007 what Indiana Jones & The Great Circle did for everyone’s favourite rogue archeologist. Consisting of cutscene footage and flashes of smooth-as-you-like in-game gunplay, stealth sneaking, and high-octane car chases, this tantalising teaser for the first original Bond game since 2012’s 007 Legends (RIP LEGO James Bond — we will always want you) promises all the globe-trotting, Q-tech, charismatic quipping, and espionage you could possibly want, along with appearances from all your faves — M, Q, Moneypenny, and more.
And as if all the recognisable faces weren’t enough (including Bond himself, boasting the same scarred cheek described in Ian Fleming’s original books), the recent game also has an intriguing ensemble of recent characters, including Bond’s mentor John Greenway and the mysterious Isola. How exactly they’ll factor into the plot remains to be seen, but from the snippets of them seen here — alongside a sinister, golden mask wearing figure — we’re very intrigued to find out.
Set to release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC in 2026, a thumb-itching next twelve months or so awaits before we get to find out if IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios’ team-up on 007 First Light is more Goldeneye or more Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. Still, the long wait at least gives us more time to ponder why exactly James Bond looks like that.
