On the latest season of The White Lotus, Jason Isaacs has been playing a man whose life is – financially and personally – on the brink of falling to pieces. It’s fitting, then, that the next project you’ll see him in is a film adaptation of Raynor Winn’s memoir The Salt Path, in which a married couple face losing everything, and take what they have left on an extraordinary journey. Isaacs stars as Moth Winn, with Gillian Anderson as Raynor herself – a couple who, in quick succession, face financial ruin and a terminal diagnosis for Moth. Bundling their remaining belongings in backpacks, they venture out to walk the South West Coast Path, taking on life’s biggest curveballs together.

Faced with losing everything, Moth and Raynor zone in on what truly matters. “No material stuff seems important in those instances,” Isaacs tells Empire. “This film is an inspiring love story. I was having a conversation recently with someone wealthy, and they said, ‘My partner wouldn’t be with me if I didn’t have money.’ I was horrified! I think we all should aspire to what Ray and Moth have.”

For all the specificities of the couple’s story, The Salt Path speaks to feelings we all have about how quickly life’s seeming certainties can be ripped away. “I’ve not been in Ray and Moth’s circumstances, but I’ve certainly woken up with heart palpitations, worrying if this was about to all go away,” says Anderson, who relished getting to play a type of character she’d never explored before. “It’s a true honour to play all flavours of humanity.”
