Status update, incoming! Not 24 hours since we learned thatMikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White are both circling lead roles in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming The Social Network Part II, notification’s just come through from Deadline that another Jeremy is being scouted for Sorkin’s social media exposé sequel. Yes, according to the trade, with Jesse Eisenberg seemingly in no rush to reprise his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the follow-up to David Fincher’s The Social Network, Jeremy Strong has emerged as Sorkin and Sony’s top pick to play the billionaire tech mogul.
Per Deadline, the Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe winning actor is well in the running for a role in Sorkin’s self-written and directed movie, with sources in the know stressing that while no formal offers have been made as of yet, Strong is certainly the frontrunner to play META’s eccentric head honcho right now. And honestly, while we would’ve loved to see Eisenberg — who received an Oscar nomination for his work in the first film — return to the fray here, Strong certainly wouldn’t be a bad fit for the part. If you’re looking for an actor who can play an ethically dubious prosperous dude with significant power and influence, then you could do far worse than the man who played Kendall Roy in Succession and Roy Cohn in The Apprentice. Plus, Sorkin and Strong do have a solid track record working together, having previously teamed up on The Trial Of The Chicago 7 and Molly’s Game.
Plot specifics surrounding The Social Network Part II are a little lean on the ground just now, though we do know that the film is set to dive into Facebook’s continuing impact on society in the years since the first movie, with the revelatory findings presented in The Wall Street Journal‘s 2021 ‘Facebook Files‘ providing the framework for Sorkin’s sequel. Beyond that though, how exactly a Fincherless, Eisenbergless Social Network will shape up very much remains to be seen at this point. We’re just keeping everything crossed that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will be back to handle the score. *Alexa, play ‘Hands Cover Bruise’*
