“I just want to write something that helps people.” Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for a movie called I Can Only Imagine 2, a sequel to the faith-based music movie hit I Can Only Imagine from 2018. Inspired by the life story of musician Bart Millard and his band MercyMe, this sequel continues on the next steps forward following up on the sudden success seen in the first movie. It’s opening in theaters next February. From co-directors Andrew Erwin and Brent McCorkle, starring John Michael Finley back again in the lead role. Bart Millard, lead singer of MercyMe, faces a personal crisis at the peak of his success. As his world unravels, he struggles with his beliefs & inner demons while seeking a path through adversity. Based on the heartfelt true story behind the hit single “Even If” (listen to it here), I Can Only Imagine 2 is the inspiring next chapter of faith, family, and finding God in the fire. This sequel stars John Michael Finley, Milo Ventimiglia, Sophie Skelton, Arielle Kebbel, Sammy Dell, with Trace Adkins and Dennis Quaid. This definitely is not my jam at all, but I’m sure there are many fans out there who can’t wait for it.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Erwin & McCorkle’s sequel I Can Only Imagine 2, from YouTube:
“Returning to the world of Imagine has been a deeply personal and profoundly moving journey—for me and for so many who helped bring this uplifting story to life. Its themes of finding gratitude in our grief and discovering beauty that rises from ashes feel more relevant now than ever. Watching this chapter of Bart and Tim’s story unfold for the big screen has been an honor. I ca’’t wait for audiences everywhere to experience it this February.” –Co-director Brent McCorkle
After the breakout success of the song “I Can Only Imagine,” MercyMe’s Bart Millard (featuring John Michael Finley returning again) is living the dream—sold-out arenas, a devoted fan base, and a growing career. But behind the spotlight, Bart’s past threatens the family he’s built, especially the brittle bond with his son, Sam (Sammy Dell). When hopeful newcomer Tim Timmons (Milo Ventimiglia) joins the band for their biggest tour yet, he unknowingly brings a renewed gratitude to Bart’s life through their unlikely friendship. Bart soon discovers that Tim carries hardships—and secrets—of his own, forcing him to face his past and repair his relationships with Sam and his wife, Shannon (Sophie Skelton), before fame costs him what matters most. I Can Only Imagine 2 is co-directed by faith-based filmmakers Andrew Erwin (of October Baby, Woodlawn, I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe, American Underdog, The Jesus Music) & Brent McCorkle (of Unconditional, Jesus Revolution). The screenplay is by Brent McCorkle. Produced by Kevin Downes, Andrew Erwin, Cindy Bond, Bart Millard, Daryl Lefever, Joshua Walsh. Lionsgate will debut I Can Only Imagine 2 in theaters nationwide starting February 20th, 2026 early next year. Looks good?
