Netflix has released the first trailer for The Woman in Cabin 10, the long-awaited adaptation of Ruth Ware’s bestselling novel. Directed by Simon Stone, the psychological thriller stars Keira Knightley as Lo Blacklock, a travel journalist whose dream assignment aboard an ultra-luxury yacht quickly becomes a nightmare.

Lo’s nightmare begins when, tardy one night, she sees what she believes is a woman thrown overboard. But when she reports it, the crew and passengers insist nothing happened — everyone is accounted for. With no one believing her, Lo sets out to uncover the truth, even as her own safety begins to unravel in the middle of open waters.

The ensemble cast backing Knightley is stacked: Guy Pearce, David Ajala, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Kaya Scodelario, Art Malik, David Morrissey, Daniel Ings, and Hannah Waddingham. Rounding out the cast are Gitte Witt, Christopher Rygh, Pippa Bennett-Warner, John MacMillan, Paul Kaye, Amanda Collin, and Lisa Loven Kongsli.

What Is ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ About?

Speaking with Collider, Stone emphasized that the film avoids one of the genre’s most overused tropes. “I didn’t want to go into that,” he said when asked about the tendency to make the female lead “unreliable.” “Lead female characters have had a bit of a bad rap. It’s always the woman whose sanity we’re doubting. I wanted her to feel more like the lead characters from ‘70s paranoid thrillers — Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman in The Conversation. You never question them. You just believe they’re right. That’s what I wanted for Keira.”

To maintain that sense of conviction, Stone and cinematographer Ben Davis adopted a visual style designed to enhance isolation. Wide-angle lenses placed close to the actors distort the sense of space, transforming the opulent yacht into what Stone describes as “a floating prison.” For those of us who don’t like boats, this could be scarily effective.

“It starts as an object of aspiration. But by the end, it’s a torture device. I’m not a massive capitalist — you can probably tell,” Stone joked. “I didn’t want to glamorize the 0.001%. That level of elitism brings with it a kind of moral distance — and that makes it the perfect setting for something sinister.”

The Woman in Cabin 10 premieres October 10 on Netflix. Check out the first trailer for the film above, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates ahead of the movie’s release.
