It’s a terrific time to be a fan of the Predator franchise. If you’ve been to the cinema in recent weeks for movies like Thunderbolts*, Sinners, or Final Destination Bloodlines, you were likely treated to the visually stunning trailer for Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands — which is due out this fall. In the meantime, the filmmaker, who first smashed his way into the beloved film series with 2022’s Prey, will be delivering the titular alien like you’ve never seen him before, thanks to the upcoming Hulu animated production, Predator: Killer of Killers. Finally, we’ve been given our first look into the blood-filled in a trailer released today that paints the picture of numerous humans throughout time who all come face-to-face with the apex beast.
Traveling back and forth through history, the teaser gives audiences their first introduction to a handful of brave warriors who will be pushed to their limits when the Predator comes for their heads. Blood is spilled on swords in both the worlds of a Viking and a ninja, while a WWII pilot struggles to stay in the sky after the otherworldly threat makes its presence known. While each of these characters have proven themselves to their surrounding peers, their ultimate test of survival hinges on their encounter with a creature they never knew existed.
What’s Next for the ‘Predator’ Universe?
As mentioned, this year is a particularly exhilarating one for fans of Predator. Not only does the animated feature mark the first time the story has crossed over from live-action to animation, but there’s also a live-action film on the way that will introduce a novel character or two to the fold. In Predator: Badlands, the script is flipped, and the hunter becomes the hunted, with the trailers revealing that the Predator is the one being tracked this time around. With the assist of a Weyland-Yutani synth named Thia (Elle Fanning), the Predator will try to regain his footing and make it out alive.
Aside from being just flatout stoked for another movie in the franchise — especially one to come from Prey’s Trachtenberg — fans are particularly excited about the crossover potential that introducing Fanning’s android brings to the table. We’re long overdue for another Alien vs. Predator film, and with the recent success of Alien: Romulus, its helmer, Fede Álvarez, would be the perfect co-helmer to work alongside Trachtenberg for such a feat.
Check out the trailer for Predator: Killer of Killers above and watch it on Hulu on June 5.
