The end isn’t just near — it’s here. Today marks the end of an era for one of horror’s longest-running franchises in recent memory. Fans of The Conjuring film series will want to take a seat for this as they’re invited to feast their eyes on the full trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites, which will serve as the last time that Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will appear in the roles of real-life paranormal investigators, Lorraine and Ed Warren, respectively. After more than a decade and numerous films that spawned multiple offshoots, it’s a bittersweet moment to see the pair in the last movie, but — at the same time — we’re beyond excited to see what Farmiga, Wilson, and returning helmer, Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), have in store for us when the feature comes to cinemas on September 5.

We’ve known for a few months now that the last movie in the series will take Farmiga and Wilson’s characters to the miniature town of West Pittston, Pennsylvania, where they’ll come face-to-face with evil as they attempt to aid the Smurl family banish an alleged demon from their home. News of the case spread far beyond the community that lies just outside of Scranton, and drew in lookyloos who were intrigued by the supposed paranormal happenings going on inside. The case even attracted a genre favorite when Jason Miller, who appeared in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, took a trip to see the house for himself. With all the attention the residence received, the Warrens had their work cut out for them to separate fact from fiction and aid the desperate family regain control of their abode.

The Future of ‘The Conjuring’ Universe

Although Wilson and Farmiga might be closing this chapter of their careers, that certainly doesn’t mean that there won’t be heaps of novel stories to come from The Conjuring Universe. After all, the films have proven to be quite the moneymaker for Warner Bros., so they won’t be letting go that easily. Although no feature-length projects have been announced to be in the works at this time, 2023 brought news that a series would eventually make its way onto HBO Max.

As of last summer, the project was still on the docket, just moving slower than fans would probably like. Although no specific details have been confirmed about the series, there has been plenty of speculation that the offshoot will focus on the younger years of the couple’s career in paranormal investigation, which could very well point to perhaps the most infamous case of their lives — the Amityville haunting. This also tracks with what we see in the novel trailer, including an introduction of a younger version of Ed and Lorraine working on their first case.

Check out the final trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites above and see it in cinemas when the final chapter arrives on September 5.
