EXCLUSIVE:  France’s Loco Films has taken on international sales for Portuguese filmmaker João Rosas’ The Luminous Life ahead of its international premiere in competition at Karlovy Vary film festival in July.

The Lisbon-set story follows a 24 year-old drifter stuck between his dreams of becoming a musician and getting over his ex-girlfriend who takes a job at a stationery shop as he learns to embrace adulthood and get his life back on track.

It is the continuation of a narrative Rosas’ has been crafting since 2012 through his trilogy of award-winning shorts — Entrecampos, Maria do Mar, and Catavento — all featuring the same characters at different stages of childhood and adolescence. The Luminous Life is his debut feature.

Producers are Portugal’s Midas Filmes and France’s Les Films de l’Après-Midi.

Loco Films’ Laurent Danielou tells Screen the film is “a fresh and compelling portrait of farewell to youth” and cites Rosas’ “deeply human storytelling.”

He adds: “We were equally struck by the way he captures the city of Lisbon, making it a central character in its own right.”
