Luca Guadagnino is in talks to direct Artificial for Amazon MGM Studios, a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence.

Guadagnino had been preparing to direct Sgt. Rock for DC Studios before production was pushed back by a year.

According to reports Artificial will take place in 2023 when OpenAI fired and then rehired its founder Sam Altman. Reports added that Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro and Yura Borisov from Anora are in talks to star.

Altman, the high priest of artificial intelligence, has alarmed some observers who argue the company is straying from its mandate to harness the technology for the benefit of humanity.

Amazon MGM Studios would only confirm the Italian director’s engagement in early talks, and added that Simon Rich wrote the screenplay and will produce with Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford. Jennifer Fox is also in talks to produce.

Guadagnino and Amazon MGM Studios collaborated on the upcoming After The Hunt, which stars Julia Roberts, Garfield and Ayo Edebiri and opens on October 10, as well as last year’s Challengers with Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist.

Heyman is stewarding the next James Bond film alongside Amy Pascal for Amazon MGM Studios.
