The 21st century has birthed some truly remarkable horror icons. Jigsaw in Saw, Art the Clown in Terrifier, Esther in Orphan, Annabelle in The Conjuring, M3GAN in, er, M3GAN — you get the idea. But there is no up-to-date movie monster quite like Octavia Spencer’s Sue Ann, the titular teen-killing veterinarian assistant at the centre of Tate Taylor’s Ma. Such is the love fans have for Spencer’s unhinged spinster, who never drinks alone, that Blumhouse has used its inaugural Business of Fear event to officially confirm that after keeping us waiting for six years, Ma 2 is coming.

“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma,” said Blumhouse founder/CEO Jason Blum, announcing the long-awaited revenge horror sequel. “Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.” Whether director Taylor, who previously teamed up with Spencer on The Help, will return alongside his lead for more ill-advised partying remains to be seen, as does whether Scotty Landes will be back on writing duties. And as for what the sequel will entail, your guess really is as good as ours. As you may recall, the first film sort of ended with *SPOILER WARNING* Spencer’s Sue Ann laying down next to her childhood tormentor and seemingly getting burned alive, but we never actually saw her kick the bucket (or, in this instance, fry in the fire), so there’s some ambiguity there.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back when Ma came out, Tate floated the idea of a sequel, suggesting Sue Ann could move to the Pacific Northwest and reinvent herself as a realtor, bumping off “white people looking at McMansions” during open houses. Whether Sue Ann winds up in real estate or not for her sure-to-be-bloody return matters not, consider us sold already on the return of a viral horror queen. And Taylor, if you’re reading and looking for a title, may we suggest Ma Ma? Simple, elegant. Or, to draw in the cinephile crowd, Y 2 Ma Ma Tambien perhaps? How about Ma Ma Mia: Here We Go Again? Okay, we’ll work on it…
