EXCLUSIVE: Magnify has boarded international sales to Stillz’s Colombia-set coming-of-age story Barrio Triste ahead of its world premiere at Venice Film Festival (August 27-September 9) in Horizons.
The feature directorial debut by Stillz, the Colombian-American music video director and photographer who has worked with Bad Bunny and Rosalía, takes place in Medellin in 1987 as teen outcasts steal a news camera to document their risky lives.
Barrio Triste is produced by Harmony Korine’s collective EDGLRD and according to the film’s representatives “taps into the anxieties of a youth culture from the margins of history yearning to be understood”.
The cast features Juan Pablo Baena, Samuel Velazquez, Tomas Tinoco Higuita, Bryan Erlin Garcia, Samuel Andres Celis, Brahian Acecedo, Samuel Ruiz, Estiven Salazar, and Jose Arley Marin Gonzalez.
Following the Lido world premiere the film will receive its North American premiere at TIFF and US premiere at New York Film Festival.
Barrio Triste is presented by EDGLRD’s Korine, James Clauer, and Eric Kohn, and Esteban Zuluaga of Stillz’s Miami-based production company WeOwnTheCity.
Magnify’s director of global sales Austin Kennedy brokered the deal with UTA Independent Film Group, which represents North American rights.
Kennedy, who will launch sales in Venice and TIFF with manager of global sales Phoebe Liebling, said: “Barrio Triste is a hypnotic and visually stunning film that will stay with you for days after watching, in part thanks to the masterful score by Arca. We can’t wait for audiences to discover the film at the upcoming fall festivals.” Oscar-nominated Leslie Shatz, who worked on The Mummy and Biutiful, is the sound designer.
Magnify’s autumn slate features Gastón Solnicki’s Venice Horizons world premiere The Souffleur starring Willem Dafoe; and Bretten Hannam’s TIFF Platform selection At The Place Of Ghosts starring Forest Goodluck.
Upcoming titles include Ulrike Ottinger’s The Blood Countess starring Isabelle Huppert; Rafael Manuel’s directorial premiere Filipiñana made in partnership with Film4; and Jealous White Men, a re-imagining of Charles Darwin’s expedition that is currently in pre-production.
