Imagine spending the rest of reality’s existence with one person. It would have to be someone beyond special, whom you could ride with through good and bad, and never get completely unwell of even millennia. Choosing the person is exactly the dilemma facing Elizabeth Olsen in the upcoming rom-com Eternity. Before the film heads to the Toronto International Film Festival in September, A24 released the first trailer highlighting her predicament as she’s stuck between not one, but two potential partners to share forever with. Both of her prospects are also high-flying stars, with one being Top Gun: Maverick‘s Miles Teller and the other, Masters of the Air‘s Callum Turner.
In the trailer, the gates of the afterlife open up, revealing a reality where everyone gets to choose where they want to spend eternity after their death and with whom. Larry (Teller) arrives shortly after his demise, and, once he learns the ropes, his wife Joan (Olsen) appears and reunites with him to choose what their forever holds. However, that decision becomes more complicated when the staff reintroduces Joan’s first husband, Luke (Turner). Luke died in the war before they could ever truly have a life together, and he’s spent decades waiting for the chance to see her again and, maybe, finally realize what they never had a chance to. Suddenly, she’s stuck weighing spending the rest of time with the man she settled for and built a life with, or the one that was tragically ripped away. Thus begins a competition between the two men to show Joan why she fell in love with them before a final decision has to be made.
Eternity hails from David Freyne, who’s no stranger to rom-coms after helming the 2020 LGBTQ+ feature Dating Amber. He directed from a screenplay penned by Designated Survivor writer Patrick Cunnane. Olsen enters the project coming off the dystopian sci-fi drama The Assessment, though she’s also gearing up for a sort-of return to her fan-favorite MCU role as the Scarlet Witch in the upcoming animated series Marvel Zombies. Both Teller and Turner have also kept busy of delayed, with the former recently sharing the screen with Anya Taylor-Joy in The Gorge, while the latter joined Alia Shawkat for the satirical war drama Atropia at Sundance. In addition to the trio of stars, Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph is also on board for Eternity, alongside John Early and Olga Merediz.
A24 is already having a great year in the rom-com department. Back in June, the indie giant released the much-anticipated Materialists, the second film from director Celine Song after her acclaimed breakout hit Past Lives in 2023, to widespread praise from both critics and audiences. Also featuring a love triangle with Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, it managed to score $52 million globally at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing films under the company’s banner. That will be a tough act for Eternity to follow, but with its own starry trio, it’ll look to make a good impression at TIFF and grip viewers with its story of love after death.
Eternity will have its world premiere at TIFF, which runs from September 4 through 14. Check out the trailer in the player above.
