There has been an awakening in the Schwarts… have you felt it? Well, Amazon MGM Studios certainly has. Following the surprise reveal last June that legendary sci-fi spoof Spaceballs would be getting the sequel treatment from Josh Gad and Barb And Star director Josh Greenbaum, today has seen a slurry of stimulating reveals that assure us they’re not just doing this for the money — or even just for a shit load of money. Firstly, a surprise teaser for Spaceballs 2 released this afternoon, taking aim at Hollywood’s reboot/sequel culture as 99-year-old legend Mel Brooks helped reveal a 2027 release date for the movie. Then, as if that weren’t enough, Variety followed up with confirmation that Brooks will reprise the role of Yogurt in the 40-year-gestating movie, before Deadline sent our hype levels through the roof with word that actual Rick Moranis and actual Bill Pullman will both be back for this one, too. Phew! Check out the tongue-in-cheek release date reveal below;

Now, there’s a lot to process here — not least the fact that there’s been a gazillion Star Wars projects, two Dunes, seven Jurassic Parks, soon-to-be-five Avatars, 36 MCU movies (with two different Robert Downey Jr.’s), two DCUs, several iterations of The Lion King, a whole ton more franchisifying projects, and Oppenheimer since the OG Spaceballs released in 1987. Surely the biggest piece of news from today’s ‘Balls drop though — beyond the fact that a nearly centenarian Brooks is still on such pointed, moviemaking form — is that Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement to reprise the role of the Darth Vader aping Dark Helmet. As many of you will know, Moranis has been largely absent from our screens for over two decades now, with his last major gig being as the voice of Rutt in Disney’s Brother Bear back in 2004, and his last live-action starring role coming all the way back in 1997’s Honey We Shrunk Ourselves. Here however, he’ll be back as Helmet alongside Bill Pullman’s Lone Starr and Brooks’ Yogurt, with Deadline‘s sources indicating that Moranis will also share the screen with Keke Palmer in the movie, as well as the previously announced Gad.

Written by Gad with Detective Pikachu duo Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, the plot of Spaceballs‘ sequel — described by Gad as “the funniest and best thing” he’s ever worked on — is currently shrouded in mystery. Brooks however has cheekily referred to the spoof revival as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” Now if Amazon could kindly release the Spaceballs 2: A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film merchandise, then we will happily order a t-shirt, lunchbox, flamethrower, and whatever else while we wait for more news. In the meantime, may the Schwartz be with you.
