What does it take for an acting legend to come out of retirement? For Joe Pesci, it was the prospect of teaming up with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Martin Scorsese on gangster epic The Irishman. For Daniel Day-Lewis, the three-time Oscar winner was moved to make a comeback in upcoming drama Anemone by the promise of working with his son Ronan. For 92 year venerable Sir Michael Caine however, iconic star of Get Carter, Zulu, and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, there could only be one movie worth returning for: Vin Diesel’s The Last Witch Hunter 2… naturally.

Yes, in one of the more eyebrow-raising casting announcements of 2025, Variety is reporting that two-time Academy Award winner Caine — last seen on our screens in 2023 offering The Great Escaper — is set to reprise the role of Dolan, the priest aide to Vin Diesel’s witch hunter Kaulder, in a fast-tracked sequel to gigantic Vin’s 2015 fantasy film. For those who didn’t see the original (which is, in fairness, most of us, as the original grossed just $119 million globally at the box office before being foist upon streaming services), The Last Witch Hunter — a passion project for Vin Diesel, who adapted his own Dungeons & Dragons campaigns for the film — told the story of Kaulder, the… well.. last witch hunter, a hero cursed with eternal life and tasked with stopping a potentially apocalyptic plague. The film itself was a bit of a dud, but its final act did sort-of tease scope for a sequel, with Vin Diesel’s Kaulder teaming up with Caine’s 36th Dolan and Rose Leslie’s good witch Chloe, ready to embark on more witch-hunting adventures.

The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture group chair Adam Fogelson in a statement accompanying the sequel’s announcement. “That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world.” Well then there we have it. Get ready for the return of Sir Michael Caine in The Last Witch Hunter 2, the sequel to the global fan favourite that was The Last Witch Hunter. What a time to be alive!
