EXCLUSIVE: Mubi has acquired worldwide rights on the 4K restoration of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Amores Perros, and is scheduling a theatrical re-release of the film.

The 4K restoration of Amores Perros launched in Cannes Classics yesterday (Tuesday, May 20), 25 years after the film originally debuted in the Critics’ Week sidebar, winning the Grand Prize.

Mubi will conduct a global theatrical re-release of the film, in collaboration with cultural institutions. The film will be available to stream exclusively on Mubi worldwide following its theatrical release, including a co-exclusive period in Latin America until September 2027.

The restoration was carried out by the Criterion Collection, Estudio Mexico Films, and Altavista Films, with colour supervision by Iñárritu and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and a recent 5.1 surround sound mix by Jon Taylor at NBCUniverseal StudioPost.

Amores Perros depicts three connected stories, as an amateur dog fighter, a supermodel, and an assassin all struggle to find love, and find their lives transformed by a car crash in Mexico City.

An installation inspired by the film is in the works, and will launch in Milan in September and Mexico City in October this year, with additional locations to be announced.

Amores Perros received a nomination for best foreign language film at the Oscars and Golden Globes.

“Amores Perros is one of the most electrifying debuts in cinema history,” said Efe Cakarel, Mubi founder and CEO. “Twenty-five years after its Cannes premiere, it feels as urgent and alive as ever.”

“It’s incredibly meaningful to see Amores Perros find a new home with MUBI—a platform that truly values bold filmmaking,” said Iñárritu. “Twenty-five years later, I’m thankful to those who’ve kept it alive, and excited for new audiences to experience it for the first time.”

Iñárritu and actor Gael Garcia Bernal were present in Cannes for the Classics screening.
