Music Box Films has picked up North American rights to The Summer Book starring Glenn Close following its 2024 world premiere at BFI London Film Festival.
Charlie McDowell adapted Tove Jansson’s novel about grief and the bond between nine-year-old Sophia, played by Emily Matthews, and her grandmother. The relatives and the girl’s father, played by Anders Danielsen Lie, spend time at the family’s summer home in the Gulf of Finland as storms gather.
Music Box Films will open The Summer Book theatrically on September 19 at the Angelika Film Center in New York.
The distributor is partnering with Kanopy on the release in the US library streaming platform’s first narrative feature collaboration. Kanopy will serve as the exclusive public library and educational streaming outlet for the release and the film will be available to subscribers and educators after the theatrical run.
“At a time when many independent films struggle to find a home on mainstream platforms, Kanopy is redefining what distribution can look like – prioritising access, curation, and cultural value,” said Jason Tyrrell, EVP of content at OverDrive, which acquired Kanopy in 2021.
The Summer Book was produced by Kath Mattock for Stille Productions, Kevin Loader for Free Range Films, Duncan Montgomery for High Frequency Entertainment, Aleksi Bardy for Helsinki Film, McDowell and Alex Orlovsky for Case Study Films, and Close.
Executive producers include Jack Selby and Rick Covert for High Frequency, Arthur Farache and Victoria Castelli for MUV Capital and Lily Collins for Case Study Films.
The transaction was negotiated by Brian Andreotti on behalf of Music Box Films, Courtney Kyer on behalf of Kanopy, and CAA Media Finance for the filmmakers.
