Two women, three countries, one relentless pursuit of democracy. HBO has revealed the official trailer for a documentary film titled Night is Not Eternal, the next film by doc filmmaker Nanfu Wang (One Child Nation, In the Same Breath). This recently premiered at a diminutive film festival and is now set for a streaming launching on HBO & Max starting next week. For seven years she has followed Rosa Maria Paya, daughter of the five time Nobel Peace Prize nominated activist, Oswaldo Paya, in Rosa’s fight for democracy in Cuba. Interwoven with Rosa’s narrative are Nanfu’s poignant reflections on her Chinese upbringing and of eroding democratic norms in the US, revealing unsettling similarities to the authoritarian system she left behind. A powerful meditation on political change and individual action against seemingly insurmountable odds, the doc Night is Not Eternal reflects on the complexities of exile and diminutive acts of defiance to create a narrative that crosses geographical boundaries exploring a universal longing for freedom. If you’re curious, get a look.

Night Is Not Eternal Doc Poster

Night Is Not Eternal is a deeply personal exploration of political activism through the eyes of Chinese American filmmaker Nanfu Wang. For over seven years, Nanfu follows Rosa María Payá, a newborn Cuban activist & daughter of 5-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Oswaldo Payá, in her fight for democratic change in Cuba. Driven by her own experiences in China, Nanfu is drawn to Rosa’s story and parallels between their homelands. With intimate access, Nanfu follows Rosa’s journey from the streets of Havana to rallies and conferences worldwide, capturing her transformation from a grassroots activist to an international public figure, and documenting the challenges faced by activists resisting authoritarian regimes. Night Is Not Eternal is directed by Chinese-American doc filmmaker Nanfu Wang, director of the docs Hooligan Sparrow, I Am Another You, One Child Nation, In the Same Breath, and “Mind Over Murder” previously. Produced by Lori Cheatle and Nanfu Wang. This first premiered at the 2024 Montclair Film Festival. HBO releases Night is Not Eternal streaming on Max starting November 19th, 2024 this fall.
