The Diplomat was renewed for Season 4 not long ago ahead of the Season 3 premiere, and now we finally have an idea of what the next chapter for Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is going to look like. Netflix has released the first official trailer for The Diplomat, which brings back Russell’s Wyler and also introduces Bradley Whitford, who recently starred as Dr. Rick Stanton in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). Although the trailer does not announce an official release date, it does confirm that the show will return to streaming before the end of the year. Allison Janney will play the President of the United States in Season 3, with Whitford suiting up as the first husband alongside Russell and Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler.

The Diplomat Season 3 follows Kate Wyler (Russell), who is currently living the life she never wanted. After accusing Vice President Grace Penn (Janney) of hatching a terrorist plot and admitting she was only after the VP’s job, a plot potentially hatched by Hal (Sewell) has left the President dead and Grace in charge of the free world. However, Hal’s campaign to make Kate the Vice President isn’t slowing down, and she steps into the role she’s so desperately been trying to avoid. She now has goods she never expected, a complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and an unusual bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn (Whitford). The show was written by Debora Cahn, who also executive produces and showruns. Alex Graces, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie will also star in The Diplomat Season 3.

Just How Well Has ‘The Diplomat’ Fared on Rotten Tomatoes?

The first season of The Diplomat was well-received by critics, earning a “certified fresh” 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience score dipped to a disastrous 58% in Season 1. The show picked things up on both ends of the spectrum in Season 2, scoring an even fresher 95% rating on the aggregate site and an 84% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Keri Russell was even nominated for an Emmy for her work on The Diplomat Season 1, but she ultimately didn’t take home the gold. Netflix will likely announce the show’s official return date in the coming months.

The Diplomat Season 3 will premiere later this year. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the series and watch the first two seasons of The Diplomat on Netflix.
