“What might be inside that egg?” Whoa! GKids is preparing to give the 1980s cult classic anime Angel’s Egg a proper theatrical release this movie in US movie theaters. From master filmmaker Mamoru Oshii, Angel’s Egg is a Japanese animated experimental post-apocalyptic science fantasy OVA that first debuted direct-to-video in Japan in 1985. It has been restored in glorious, pristine 4K and will be re-released this fall. After playing in Cannes, the film is screening at Fantastic Fest, NYFF, and the Sitges Film Festival before is theatrical debut in November. A must see! In an underwater city, a youthful girl takes care of a gigantic egg she holds carefully in her arms – a treasure that she believes is an angel’s egg. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. At first it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two. Then, one night, the boy crushes her precious egg… The New York Japan Society says the film is “an allegorical fantasy enriched by symbolism and biblical allusion.” Featuring the voices of Mako Hyôdô & Jinpachi Nezu. There’s not much dialogue – it’s all about the stunning visuals and allegorical storytelling in this anime classic. This looks amazing! I’ve never seen it – now is the right time to finally watch it. Enjoy.

A mysterious youthful girl wanders a desolate, otherworldly landscape, carrying a gigantic egg. First released directly to video in 1985, Angel’s Egg was produced by Tokuma Shoten and is a original collaboration between internationally acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (of Ghost in the Shell), who wrote & directed the feature, and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (of Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theology, with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly attractive hand-drawn allegorical fantasy. Angel’s Egg, originally known as 天使のたまご in Japanese, is both written and directed by maestro Japanese animation filmmaker Mamoru Oshii, his very first feature film at the time before going on to make The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (1986), The Red Spectacles (1987), and Ghost in the Shell (1995). From an original idea by Mamoru Oshii & Yoshitaka Amano. Made by Studio Deen. The movie was released by Tokuma Shoten in December 1985 in Japan, though it never got a US theatrical release. GKids re-releases Oshii’s Angel’s Egg movie in 4K in select US theaters starting November 19th, 2025. For more details, visit their official site.
