On the red carpet at the Oscars 2025 Sunday, elderly Hollywood glam reigned supreme, with stars like Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Stone, Elle Fanning, Scarlett Johansson, and more reaching for vintage and vintage-inspired looks and earning a place on our best-dressed list. The look is a red carpet mainstay for a reason—does a throwback to the time before social media, dripping with pearls and oozing with elegance, ever go out of style?—but another, less demure fashion trend also reached an acme at the legendary Vanity Fair Oscar Party after the ceremony’s close.
When heading to the awards season’s large afterparty, many of Hollywood’s finest chose to slip into something a little more comfortable—or, at least, a little more sheer—for their second look of the large night.
Contrast Bianca Censori’s jaw-dropping nude red carpet look at the 2025 Grammys with Sunday evening’s VF party red carpet, where Julia Fox entered the venue, wrapped in a sheer gown by Turkish designer Dilara Findikoglu, made of limpid mesh with long pieces of natural hair encased in the fabric and wrapping around Fox’s torso and thighs. Comparisons to Botticelli’s oil painting The Birth of Venus, which hangs in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, are appropriate: Fox’s stylist, Briana Andalore, told VF via email that the look was inspired by Venus.

“There are always obstacles,” Andalore said of executing the daring look, “but I believe they often lead to even better outcomes. Sometimes, the universe takes control, and you just have to trust the process. In this case, the challenge gave birth to something even more striking.”
Fox wore vintage mesh shoes, and her glam team kept the rest of her look minimal “to create a beautifully executed moment that highlighted Julia’s natural beauty.”
Andalore, who accompanied Fox to the party, said that the response was “overwhelmingly positive,” and that “[Fox] truly felt like a painting come to life.”
Then, for something completely but not entirely different, there was Zoë Kravitz’s peek-a-booty moment in a black Saint Laurent column gown featuring a sheer black swiss-dot back panel complete with a perfectly placed porthole for a look at her derrière. Until Kravitz turned around, the sleek, high-necked, long-sleeve dress would have been a stunning and sophisticated statement. With the addition of the surprise rear sheer, complete with a bow adorning the center, the look became a playful wink, an injection of youth and fun. It’s a party, after all!
