193 has secured extensive sales on four titles from its Cannes slate, including Lynne Ramsay’s Competition entry Die, My Love.
Patrick Wachsberger’s sales and production firm, a stand-alone joint venture with US firm Legendary, has sold Die, My Love to Baltics (GPI), CIS (Provzglyad-Vesta), Hong Kong (Golden Scene), Indonesia (Falcon Films), Israel (Forum Film), Japan (The Klockworx), Middle East (Italia Films), Mongolia (FilmBridge), Philippines (Pioneer Films), Poland (Vision Film), Portugal (NOS Audiovisuais), and Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro (KCS).
Mubi previously picked up the film during the festival for North America, UK-Ireland, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Turkey, India, Australia and New Zealand, in a huge $24m deal orchestrated by 193 and CAA. NonStop Entertainment also acquired Nordic rights earlier this week.
193 has also sold Scandalous!, Colman Domingo’s directorial debut starring Sydney Sweeney and David Jonsson, to UK-Ireland (Entertainment Film Distributors), Italy (Rai Cinema), Spain (DeAPlaneta Entertainment), Scandinavia (Nordisk Film), Australia-New Zealand (Village Roadshow), Baltics (GPI), Benelux (Belga Films), Eastern Europe (Monolith Films), Greece (The Film Group), Israel (Forum Film), Latin America (Sun Distribution Group), Mongolia (FilmBridge), the Philippines (Pioneer Films), Portugal (Pris Audiovisuais), South Africa (Empire Entertainment) and Turkey (Fabula Films).
Roshan Sethi’s action title The Surgeon starring Michelle Yeoh has sold to Australia-New Zealand (Umbrella Entertainment), Baltics (ACME Film), Benelux (18K), CIS and Eastern Europe (Unicorn Media), Greece (The Film Group), Israel (United King Films), the Philippines (Pioneer Films), Portugal (NOS Audiovisuais), South Africa (DeAPlaneta Entertainment) and Turkey (Fabula Films).
Fourthly, 193 has sold Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger remake starring Peter Dinklage to Australia-New Zealand (Umbrella Entertainment), CIS (Golem Films), Germany-Austria (Wild Bunch), Greece (The Film Group), Israel (Golem Films), Italy (Eagle Pictures), Japan (Nikkatsu Corporation), Middle East (The Plot Pictures), the Philippines (Pioneer Films), Poland (Vision Film), South Africa (Empire Entertainment) and Spain (Vertigo Films).
NonStop acquired Nordic rights earlier this week; with Signature Entertainment taking the film for UK-Ireland.
Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, Ramsay’s fifth feature Die, My Love is adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s novel, and follows a mother living in forgotten rural Montana, struggling to maintain her sanity as she battles with post-partum psychosis.
Domingo’s Scandalous! is scheduled to begin filming in the US next month. It will follow the secret 1957 romance between Kim Novak, played by Sweeney, and Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr., played by Screen Star of Tomorrow Jonsson. Sweeney is producing the film with Tani Cohen and Bobby Rock, from Matthew Fantaci’s script.
The Surgeon will star Yeoh as a retired surgeon who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient; which leads her to a brutal confrontation with her captors. It is the latest collaboration between 193’s Wachsberger and producer Basil Iwankyk, after the John Wick franchise, which Wachsberger distributed as then-chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
Blair’s The Toxic Avenger is a remake of the 1984 cult classic of the same name, following a janitor – played by Dinklage – who transforms into a mutant vigilante after a freak accident.
“We are immensely proud to see our slate resonate so strongly at Cannes,” said 193 CEO Wachsberger. “Securing global sales on four high-profile films affirms the strength of our storytelling and the trust our global partners have placed in us. This is a fantastic start for our company and a signal of the compelling projects we will continue to deliver.”
Legendary and Wachsberger launched 193 earlier this year, to develop and produce its own slate of features and work with third-party producers and financiers on projects.
