It was a ceremony-packed weekend for Hollywood’s awards contenders. On Friday, we saw the Critics Choice Awards, and then on Saturday, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and the Directors Guild forced nominees to either choose a ceremony or make a quick cross-town trip to attend both events.
Anora director Sean Baker chose to make that drive from Beverly Hills to Century City, scooping up the Theatrical Feature Film award at the DGAs then heading to the PGAs just in time to see his film win top honors there, as well.
The ceremony was punctuated by an acknowledgment of the recent fires that tore through Los Angeles, likely changing the face of the region. “Hacks has shot in Los Angeles for five years now, and so much on location, particularly in Altadena,” said Hacks writer and producer Jen Statsky as she accepted the show’s Danny Thomas Award. “Altadena was where Deborah Vance’s L.A. house was, where the businesses who were so kind to our cast and crew were.”
“The people of Altadena are good people, and our hearts are with them,” she continued. “The people of Los Angeles are good people, and our hearts are with them, and us leaders need to keep this industry thriving for not just the people in this room at the top.”
Other PGA winners included The Wild Robot in the animated film category, Saturday Night Live for live TV, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story took home the documentary award.
