Is this MobLand in witness protection? If it is, they’re not doing a very good job at hiding what they’re up to. Netflix has just dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated adaptation of Richard Osman‘s The Thursday Murder Club, the global sensation crime novel, and its star-studded cast — including Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, currently ham-Irishing it up a storm in Guy Ritchie‘s MobLand, alongside Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie — are clearly having a ball running around a retirement home trying to solve a murder, while making the perfect cup of tea. Boil the kettle, please.

Set to premiere globally on August 28, 2025, the film is a return for director Chris Columbus’return to A-list moviemaking, this time blending a combo of British wit, jigsaw puzzles, and coldblooded killing in equal measure, as the star duo pivot from sweary Guy Ritchie mayhem to a much cozier kind of chaos — the type involving tea, knitting circles, and a suspicious number of dead bodies in a silent retirement village. Less blood, more biscuits. Think Knives Out by way of Calendar Girls, with a little Midsomer Murders for good measure.

Based on the best-selling novel by Richard Osman, The Thursday Murder Club introduces us to Coopers Chase, a luxury retirement community where the residents are much sharper than the average village gossip would suggest. At the center of our mayhem is British national treasure Mirren as Elizabeth, a former MI5 agent with a mind like a steel trap and a suspiciously well-stocked garden shed. As one would expect. Brosnan — mercifully without that accent from MobLand — plays Ron, a retired union boss who’s all bluster and booming one-liners,while rounding out the club are Kingsley as Ibrahim, a quietly brilliant psychiatrist who sees everything — that’s psychiatrist, not psychic — and Imrie as Joyce, a relentlessly, almost aggressively cheerful retiree whose diary entries are as sweet as they are accidentally revealing.

What Is ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ About?

Director Chris Columbus, whose credits include Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two Harry Potter films, spoke with Collider about what drew him to the project. “The idea was to create a retirement village that we’ve never seen before on film… a place where the viewers would want to spend their twilight years,” he explained. “This somewhat magical backdrop creates a strong contrast to the violent murders that occur in the film.”

The Thursday Murder Club premieres globally on Netflix on August 28, 2025. Bring your knitting, your notepad and a suspect list.
