Marvel’s First Family may be getting ready to make their massive screen comeback in The Fantastic Four: First Steps next month, but they aren’t the only superbrood eyeing a return to our screens sometime soon. Following last year’s D23 announcement that Incredibles 3 is in the works at Pixar, today THR are reporting that Pixar has set the man to lead the Parr clan’s third outing — and it isn’t, as we’d initially been led to believe, Brad Bird. Instead, Elemental and The Good Dinosaur director Peter Sohn has been picked to steer Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Dash, Violet, and Jack-Jack’s next spandex clad escapade.

Now, before anyone starts panicking, Bird hasn’t flown the nest entirely for the follow-up to his 2018 superhero sequel Incredibles 2 — he will be returning as writer on Sohn’s film, the plot of which is currently being hashed out as we type. And, what’s more, having worked alongside Sohn on all of his prior animated efforts, Bird — along with Pixar chief Pete Docter — personally chose his longtime collaborator to carry the Parr torch as Pixar aims to round out a potential all-timer movie trilogy. As for an explanation of why Bird won’t be helming Incredibles 3, the answer is pretty uncomplicated: the man is just too busy. Not only is the Ratatouille filmmaker in pre-production on his long, long, long gestating sci-fi noir joint Ray Gunn at Skydance, but he’s also getting set to tackle the also long, long, long gestating historical epic 1906 for Disney, which has been in and out of development for almost two decades at this point.

As you’d imagine, it’s still incredibly early days for Incredibles 3 at this point, with no word on a prospective release date, casting, or even a snatch of a logline just yet. But with Sohn having comfortably graduated from his status as Bird protégé on his first two features, having zeroed in on the intricacies of familial dynamics in The Good Dinosaur before flexing his world-building muscle on a grander scale with Elemental, and the Incredibles‘ creator back to tackle the script, we’re locked in and ready to stick with the Parrs for the course once more. Now where are our supersuits?
