“Has anyone ever thought of not going to the North?” Oh no – don’t cause a scene, Elisa. Montelona Cine has unveiled an official promo trailer for the indie sci-fi film titled A Bright Future, the second feature film by Uruguayan filmmaker Lucía Garibaldi. She’s bringing this modern film to the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival this summer, playing this A Bright Future drama in their Viewpoints section as a world premiere. Starring Martina Passeggi, Soledad Pelayo, Sofia Gala, and Alfonso Tort. Passeggi stars as astute, inquisitive Elisa who lands a job placement “up North.” Although it sounds perfect, there’s one problem: nobody who goes there ever returns. Elisa is one of the last women chosen to go “North,” a kind of promised land where history is being made. Everyone around her, including her beloved Mother, eagerly awaits her departure… But soon Elisa realizes that she does not want to leave and that simply saying so is not enough. Hmmmm an intriguing sci-fi premise referencing many social & wealth class problems in the world today. Worth a look.
Here’s the festival promo trailer for Lucía Garibaldi’s sci-fi film A Bright Future, direct from YouTube:
Elisa (Martina Passeggi) lives with her mother in a housing complicated suspended in time, where large-scale fumigations are routine. Pets have disappeared and the population is mostly elderly. The most promising youthful people are sent to the North, a promised land where ‘history is being rewritten without mistakes.’ Elisa, the last youthful person in her community, is selected. Her mother, a devoted believer in the North, works double shifts to win a coveted travel auction. Elisa’s older sister was sent before, and their mother dreams of reuniting them. The arrival of Leonor, an enigmatic nurse with a prosthetic leg, disrupts their routine: Elisa discovers her youth is a highly desired commodity. As the adaptation process advances, her sister’s icy messages and the North’s obsession with perfection and productivity plant seeds of doubt. She refuses to become just another piece of the modern order, even if resistance makes her the most coveted of all.
A Bright Future, also known as Un Futuro Brillante in Spanish, is directed by Uruguayan indie filmmaker Lucía Garibaldi, director of the film The Sharks (2019) previously, and a few episodes of the “Barrabrava” series most recently. The screenplay is co-written by Lucía Garibaldi and Federico Alvarado. Produced by Montelona in Uruguay; along with Cimarrón (from Argentina) and Achtung Panda! (from Germany). This is world premiering at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival this summer – playing in the Viewpoints section there. No other release dates are set yet – stay tuned for more news. First impression? Who’s intrigued to watch?
