Ray Winstone will receive an honorary Heart of Sarajevo award at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival.
“[Winstone] is an actor who has captivated audiences for five decades with his great talent and undeniable presence,” said festival director Jovan Marjanovic. “With honesty and intensity that resonate far beyond the screen, he has given us many unforgettable characters.”
“The Sarajevo Film Festival continues to champion cinema that transcends spectacle, offering depth and meaning,” said Winstone.
Winstone made his film breakout in Alan Clarke’s 1979 drama Scum as Carlin, a adolescent man headed to the borstal. The actor has since appeared in UK independent films such as Gary Oldman’s Nil By Mouth – winning the best actor Bifa and equivalent Bafta nomination – and Jonathan Glazer’s debut Sexy Beast.
His many US credits include Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, and Cold Mountain, Snow White & The Huntsman, Noah and Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Winstone will soon be seen in the second season of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen, launching on the platform next year.
He joins Stellan Skarsgard as an honorary Heart of Sarajevo recipient at this year’s festival. The 31st Sarajevo Film Festival runs from August 15-22.
