From Beau Is Afraid to Uncut Gems, Civil War to Men, and Bring Her Back to The Zone Of Interest, A24 has established itself as one of cinema’s most prominent distributors of palm-sweatingly intense movies. And we have a hunch that writer-director Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You — in which Rose Byrne plays Linda, a Montauk psychotherapist mother in the midst of a full-on, apocalyptic nervy b — is going to make a suitably nerve-shredding addition to that most sweat-soaked of cinematic canons. Clench your cheeks and check out the trailer below;

Sometimes parenting can feel a little like being a firefighter, in a town full of fires, armed with nought but a leaky water pistol. In If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Byrne’s Linda — as we see in this trailer — is dealing with all the fires: an MIA husband; a daughter with an undiagnosable mystery illness; a therapist (Conan O’Brien) generously describable as casually engaged with his client; a modern pal (A$AP Rocky) who’s into buying drugs on the murky web; and a massive hole in her lounge ceiling that’s growing bigger by the moment. If it sounds like a lot, then that’s because it is a lot — and it looks like Byrne, who won the prestigious Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for her turn here, is fully committed to immersing us in every frenetic moment of Linda’s matriarchal meltdown.

The latest in a recent spate of primordially charged ‘mother’s love’ genre movies (see also: Nightbitch, Echo Valley, Bring Her Back), If I Had Legs I’d Kick You has all the makings of another profound — and profoundly panicking — exploration of the pressure cooker that is parenthood. It also, frankly, looks like a batshit wild ride for all comers from multi-hyphenate filmmaker Bronstein. American cinemagoers can look forward to seeing what A24 and Bronstein have been cooking when If I Had Legs I’d Kick You hits cinemas stateside in October — and while we haven’t got a confirmed UK release date just yet, stay tuned for updates as soon as we get them. In the meantime, we’re off to take some deep breaths and touch some grass…
