This has been a fun recent annual tradition: whenever Rob McElhenney’s birthday rolls around, his best bud (and co-owner of Wrexham A.F.C.) Ryan Reynolds produces a very special message of celebration. Two years ago, we got this super-catchy jaunty jig which spelled out exactly how to pronounce ‘McElhenney’. Then, last year, we got a whole Titanic riff with a drawing of McElhenney (like, ‘Mackle-henny’, if you haven’t listened to Reynolds’ song) inked as if he were one of Jack’s French girls. Now, we have a recent celebratory video from Reynolds, in McElhenney’s honour: and it all comes off the back of a thwarted Deadpool cameo.
You see, McElhenney was supposed to have a brief appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, and was even on set as a TVA agent. Except, his moment got cut in post-production. As an apology, Reynolds has now nabbed many a McElhenney moment and superimposed it into moments from his ancient movies – think of it as the cameo of a lifetime, literally.
That’s him now in Free Guy. And Blade Trinity. And RIPD. And Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. And Red Notice. And Green Lantern. And yes, even Pokémon Detective Pikachu. What better birthday wish could you ask for? It almost plays like McElhenney is Reynolds’ long-time imaginary friend. A Ryan Reynolds movie? With imaginary friends? Noting that down for future reference. Bring on next year’s McElhenney celebration.
