Scarlett Johansson will always be known for playing Black Widow in the MCU, but she’s due to make her directorial debut soon on a drama that just got an stimulating up-to-date look. The first trailer for Eleanor the Great has been officially released, which shows Johansson stepping behind the camera for the first time in her career for the film starring June Squibb, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Erin Kellyman, and Jessica Hecht. Tory Kamen wrote the script for the film, which is set to be released in theaters on September 26. Eleanor the Great follows 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, a woman who deals with a devastating loss and tells a tale that takes on a perilous life of its own. Johansson also produced her directorial debut, which is billed as a comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear become the stories we tell.
Johansson may have left the world of Marvel behind following her last appearance in 2021’s Black Widow, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been busy in the years since. Johansson most recently joined another major franchise with her role in Jurassic World Rebirth. The dinosaur film also stars Mahershala Ali and Rupert Friend. She’s even had roles in both of Wes Anderson’s recent films, Asteroid City and The Phoenician Scheme, and she also reunited with her Avengers co-star Chris Hemsworth for Transformers One. Last year, she starred alongside Channing Tatum in Fly Me to the Moon, the sweeping romantic comedy that grossed only $42 million against a $100 million budget. She even earned an Oscar nomination in 2020 for her work opposite Adam Driver in Marriage Story.
Will Scarlett Johansson Ever Come Back to Marvel?
It remains unclear if Scarlett Johansson will ever return to Marvel, even though she’s mentioned that she believes that chapter of her life is done. Johansson cites that Natasha Romanoff’s story is best left where it is, but with several of her original Avengers co-stars coming back for Doomsday, it would be surprising not to see her brought back in some capacity. Johansson was set to produce Thunderbolts* earlier this year, but she reportedly asked for her credit to be removed after she wasn’t even tangentially involved in the making of the film.
Eleanor the Great will be released on September 26. Check out the official trailer for the film above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Johansson’s future projects.
