TThe recent year is starting off with a bang, thanks to the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. The ceremony was a fun, loose event that clearly energized the ballroom. Nikki Glaser may have lost in her category, but her monologue was a win that will mean much for her down the road. The shiny hardware went to pretty diverse group of projects this evening, but some movies—particularly The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez—were rewarded with more than one trip up the stage, which should give them some additional heat in the race against Anora, Conclave, and Wicked for Best Picture at the Oscars. In the TV category, which never quite gets the same pomp and circumstance as the film awards do—but often make for more laughs during the broadcast—Shōgun and Baby Reindeer fared very well.

This evening, some winners gave passionate speeches about resilience and vision. “You can put us in jail,” said Karla Sofía Gascón, a trans actor who gives an acclaimed performance in Emilia Pérez. “You can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul, our existence, our identity.” Brady Corbet, director of The Brutalist, used his time onstage to remind the audience his was a “film that kept falling apart” and which some warned would be “undistributable.” He added that there is a lesson to be learned in his movie’s awards triumph: “No one was asking for a three-and-a-half-hour film about a mid-century designer on 70 milimeter [film], but it works.”

Elsewhere, Demi Moore, who won for her performance in the wild ride that is The Substance, managed to be both shocked and articulate at the mic, sharing a story about a time, in the midst of her superstar moment decades ago, when was told she could never be a serious actress and that golden trophies weren’t in her future. Of course it wouldn’t be the Globes—or America, for that matter—if there weren’t moments of cognitive dissonance. For instance, as we wrote in our liveblog, “In a year where Demi Moore might win an Academy Award for her work in The Substance, there have been FIVE GLP-1 commercials this broadcast.”
