The Studio was a substantial winner when the Emmy nominations were revealed yesterday, but now it’s time for Seth Rogen‘s other Apple TV+ series to shine. Platonic, the comedy series that features Rogen and Rose Byrne as a pair of best buds, is returning for its second season next month, and a current trailer shows the duo back in action. The second season of Platonic premieres with two all-new episodes on August 6; current episodes will premiere weekly until the season finale airs on October 1.
In the current trailer, Sylvia (Byrne) and Will (Rogen) are the best of friends, which is making things weird between Will and his current fiancée, Jenna (Rachel Rosenbloom). Sylvia concludes that they need to do some “normal adult stuff,” Naturally, nothing they’re doing in the trailer is normal or adult: it includes an attempt to move a pressurized beer vat that sends Sylvia airborne, a couples dinner that may or may not include gluten, and a truly gruesome golfing accident. The trailer also shows off the current season’s guest stars, a trio of Saturday Night Live alums: Aidy Bryant (Shrill), Beck Bennett (Superman), and Kyle Mooney (Y2K).
What Happened in Season 1 of ‘Platonic’?
When the first season began, Will and Sylvia were lifelong best friends, but had drifted apart when Sylvia told Will that she didn’t like his wife. However, when she learned he was getting a divorce, she reached out and reconnected. Despite their different lives — he’s newly divorced, and she’s the stay-at-home wife of lawyer Charlie (Luke Macfarlane) and mother to their three kids, and he’s a newly divorced partner in a successful brewery — they soon reconnect, and they’re up to their elderly antics again. Over the course of the season, Sylvia tries to re-enter the workforce, and Will tries to get back into the swing of dating; by season’s end, Sylvia has found a current career path, and Will has gotten engaged to Jenna.
Platonic was created by Francesca Delbanco (Friends From College) and Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). In addition to starring, Byrne and Rogen also executive produce. The series has been hailed by critics, and currently holds a 93% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review of season one, Collider’s Emily Bernard called it “a refreshing exploration of adult friendships with the opposite sex and the complications that inevitably (and unfairly) arise.”
Season two of Platonic premieres August 6 on Apple TV+; current episodes will drop weekly until the season finale debuts on October 1. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
