Acclaimed British spy series Slow Horses is coming out of the gate. In the novel trailer for the AppleTV+ series’ fifth season, Slough House is under attack from an enemy within, and everyone is a suspect. The novel season will premiere exclusively on AppleTV+ on September 24, 2025. Terror once again stalks the streets of London, as eleven people have been killed in a terrorist attack. The attack has been traced back to Slough House’s misfit gang of spies, bringing the wrath of MI5 down upon them.

Suspicion immediately falls upon insufferable tech genius Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung), who has an incongruously presentable novel girlfriend. He insists on his innocence, but MI5 Deputy Director General Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) doesn’t believe him, as they’ve locked down Slough House and everyone in it. Has he been compromised, or is the real threat still hidden? Slough House director Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) thinks someone’s turned MI5’s tactics on them, threatening to destabilize the UK the way they’ve taken down so many other nations. He may have to turn to his least functional agent, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), to save them all…

What Is ‘Slow Horses’ About?

Based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Slow Horses is set in Slough House, an office where the intelligence services’ least-desirable agents are sent. The crass, flatulent Jackson Lamb (Oldman) rules over his gang of misfits, who are typically assigned monotonous, useless tasks; however, he somehow prompts them into effective action when the country, or one of their own, is threatened. His agents include recovering alcoholic Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves), the emotionally unstable Shirley Dander (Aimee-Ffion Edwards), and the mostly competent Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar). The show’s entry point to Slough House is Cartwright (Lowden), the teenage scion of a vaunted spy family; his aging grandfather, David (Jonathan Pryce) was a high-ranking MI5 official. He’s sent there after he very publicly botches a training exercise, and soon finds a home of sorts there amidst the drudgery and humiliation.

Slow Horses has been a consistent critical hit on AppleTV+; it currently holds a 98% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review of season 4, Collider’s Jeff Ewing praised it for its “strong balance between dangerous situations and moments of well-constructed situational comedy.” The series has already been renewed for a sixth and seventh season.

The fifth season of Slow Horses will premiere on AppleTV+ on September 24, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
