“This will be the best thing I have ever written. I even thought of a title…” Brainstorm Media has revealed the official trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Psycho Therapy, made by Turkish filmmaker Tolga Karaçelik, and set in New York City. This premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival last year, under the original title The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write about a Serial Killer. Now it’s being released with both titles together – Psycho Therapy: The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write about a Serial Killer. A struggling writer befriends a retired serial killer in a desperate attempt to find inspiration for his next novel and maybe save his marriage. Covering as his marriage counselor, the killer also teaches him his methods as reality becomes deadlier than fiction. The film stars Steve Buscemi, John Magaro, and Britt Lower (from “Severance”), along with Sydney Cole Alexander, Ward Horton, and Olli Haaskivi. Tribeca states: “With a talented cast delivering engaging performances, this film offers a fresh take on familiar tropes and subverts expectations of both the comedy and serial killer genres.” This does look clever and funky, going to some unusual places mixing it up with the three of them – check it out.

In this darkly comedic tale, a struggling writer (John Magaro) finds his life taking a bizarre turn when he befriends a retired serial killer (Steve Buscemi) who becomes his unlikely marriage counselor and muse. As the writer grapples with crafting his second novel and a crumbling marriage to his disillusioned wife (Britt Lower), the former killer reluctantly offers guidance on both matters, leading to a series of twists and turns that blur the lines between reality and fiction. Psycho Therapy, also known as The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write about a Serial Killer, is both written and directed by the Turkish indie filmmaker Tolga Karaçelik, director of the films Gise Memuru, Ivy, and Butterflies previously, plus a few shorts and other projects. It’s produced by Scott Aharoni, Wren Arthur, Sinan Eczacibasi, Tolga Karaçelik, Mustafa Kaymak, Alex Peace, and Metin Alihan Yalcindag. This initially premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival last year. Brainstorm Media will Karaçelik’s Psycho Therapy in select US theaters starting on April 4th, 2025 this spring, expanding to more theaters (and also out on VOD) throughout April. Looking good?
