The final edition of Sundance Film Festival in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2026 (January 22-February 1) will celebrate standout moment
The final edition of Sundance Film Festival in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2026 (January 22-February 1) will celebrate standout moments from the last 40 years and honour founder Robert Redford’s contribution to independent cinema before the event relocates to Colorado in 2027.
The full programme will include more than 90 features, episodic projects, more than 50 shorts, and the annual Beyond Film series of talks and events.
Director of Sundance Film Festival and public programming Eugene Hernandez said in a letter released to media outlets on Monday that Redford’s “immense impact and his unwavering commitment” to the independent storytelling community will be recognised “with special moments” during the festival.
The appreciation will culminate in a Sundance Film Festival Celebration fundraiser on January 23 at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley to support Sundance Institute’s year-round programme of labs, grants, and public programming. This is separate from the established awards ceremony on January 30 at The Ray Theatre in Park City.
Starting on January 28, the festival will also honour Park City, the exclusive ski resort that has hosted the event for decades before the festival announced the decision to search for a fresh home in spring 2024 and declared Boulder the winner in March of this year.
In recent years Park City’s miniature size and frustration on the part of local businesses catering to winter sports customers amid a deluge of festival attendees and their entourages had become more urgent talking points. Some businesses liked having the festival on their doorstep, while others bemoaned the crush and the corporate activations on Main Street and surrounding streets.
In addition, the very independent filmmakers whom the festival was set up to nurture struggled with the sheer cost of travelling to an elite ski resort.
Sundance announced a search process in spring 2024 that included Salt Lake City and a reduced presence in Park City as an option. In March it announced that it would go forwards with Boulder, a university town with a population of around 105,000 according to United States Census Bureau, compared to just over 8,200 in Park City. The Institute said the fresh location aligned with the festival’s ethos and cited “a community rooted in independent thought, artistic exploration, and social impact”.
However the focus on the 2026 edition will be on honouring the festival’s ancient home. “Park City has been an integral part of our festival, and we’re honoured to show our appreciation,” said Hernandez, adding that there will be a programme of archival screenings, restorations, and special events to commemorate the town.
Hernandez said: “As we stroll up and down Main Street — which will be pedestrian-only again during the 2026 Festival! — we’re looking forward to commemorating the cherished experiences that we built together while looking to the future.” He added that the festival would not be what it is today without the local community across Utah.
Screenings will take place at Eccles Theatre, Holiday Village Cinemas, Library Center Theatre, The Ray Theatre, Redstone Cinemas, and – returning this year – The Yarrow Theatre, as well as Salt Lake Film Society’s Broadway Centre Cinemas and Rose Wagner Performing Arts Centre in Salt Lake City. Filmmaker Lodge on Main Street in Park City will host Beyond Film programming, with additional conversations at The Box at The Ray and The Park serving as a private events venue.
Premieres will be held from January 22-27 with additional showings throughout the entire Festival. The festival portal for online screenings activates on January 28 for press and industry, and a day later for the public, and will show features in the five competition sections, including NEXT. Films from other sections in the line-up can opt to participate for confined audiences.

What to Know About the 2026 Sundance Film Festival
Friends,
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival is just six months away, and today I’m excited to share some details and updates about our upcoming edition in Utah. This year will mean so much for so many reasons. Our focus is making the 2026 Festival — in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, from January 22–February 1 — one to remember, a celebration full of gratitude and joy.
“Everyone has a story.” — Robert Redford
Robert Redford’s belief in the power of storytelling has shaped independent cinema for over 40 years. That dedication forged the Sundance Film Festival. From the artists premiering their fresh works to the audiences connecting over a discovery, our stories on and off screen during each Festival are the ones we remember for a lifetime, the ones that shift culture and introduce fresh perspectives. It’s these moments that intersect and weave together into one unified, evolving story of the Festival.
Sundance Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated year-round to empowering artists and uplifting independent storytelling. We’re inspired every year to put on the Festival, our largest artist program, where we will be introducing audiences to brand fresh films and projects created by emerging and established artists alike. We also look forward to showing our appreciation to the Utah community as a whole who have supported the Festival for so many years and laid the foundation. Sundance Institute is energized by our continued engagement with Utah year-round.
No conversation about our enduring mission is complete without celebrating the dedication of our Sundance Institute President and Founder, Mr. Redford, whose vision we will be honoring at this year’s Festival. He identified the profoundness of uplifting fresh voices and protecting the essence of independent storytelling when he first embarked on this artistic endeavor with the support of so many others. That mission continues today and will for decades to come.
We hope you will join us for the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Below are some details to support you plan your own journey to Utah in January:
Mark Your Calendars
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival will take place in person January 22–February 1 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. Premieres will be held Thursday, January 22, to Tuesday, January 27, where audiences will see films, episodic projects, and more for the first time, with additional showings throughout the entire Festival. Starting on Wednesday, January 28, we’ll be kicking off our cheerful appreciation of 40-plus years of seminal independent cinema that premiered in Park City through special screenings and legacy talks and events.
For those looking to participate in the discovery from across the country, we will be offering at-home screenings available online from Thursday, January 29, to Sunday, February 1, which will feature films in our five competition sections, including NEXT. Films from other sections in our lineup can also select to participate in the online Festival program for confined audiences. Press and industry will have online access to the at-home program for the professional community beginning one day earlier on Wednesday, January 28.
Celebrating the Vision of Robert Redford
We will be recognizing Robert Redford’s immense impact and his unwavering commitment to the nurturing and development of independent storytellers and their stories through the influential Sundance Institute Labs, Sundance Film Festival, and beyond — with special moments during the 2026 Festival. Mr. Redford values the power of connecting directly with artists, especially in the natural setting of the Sundance Mountain Resort during the artist lab programs, where a supportive community of visionary artists convene and cultivate bold storytelling while taking artistic risks guided by influential artistic advisors, and at the Festival’s annual Directors Brunch, which brings together filmmakers as they prepare to introduce their stories to the world.
As part of this appreciation, we’ll be honoring Mr. Redford’s vision through our Sundance Film Festival Celebration, an exceptional evening being held on Friday, January 23, at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley. The annual event enables our nonprofit to raise funds to support independent artists year-round through labs, grants, and public programming that cultivate artists from all over the world.
Inside the 2026 Program
Our full program will include feature films, episodic projects, and brief films — welcoming 90-plus features and 50-plus shorts in 2026 — as well as our annual Beyond Film series, which showcases talks and events with some of the most compelling artists and many more. Stay tuned for more details on the stimulating upcoming lineup!
Honoring Our Park City Legacy
Park City has been an integral part of our Festival, and we’re honored to show our appreciation throughout the 2026 Festival, including a program of archival screenings, restorations, and special events. As we stroll up and down Main Street — which will be pedestrian-only again during the 2026 Festival! — we’re looking forward to commemorating the cherished experiences that we built together while looking to the future. These significant moments come from our shared history that launched some of the most iconic films that have continued to resonate for decades, fueled curiosity and change, and brought about unforgettable experiences.
The local community across Utah is a crucial part of the Sundance Film Festival: our dedicated Institute team, passionate volunteers, partners who have uplifted our gathering, local artists who have collaborated with us, and enthusiastic audiences. Without you, the Festival would not be what it is today and into the future.
This coming year will be the culmination of our yearly gathering in Park City for the Sundance Film Festival. As you might know, the Festival will be moving to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027. Yes, this is a huge change, but right now it’s crucial for us to take this moment and acknowledge all the milestones and memories that we’ve shared together in Park City.
