Ruddy typical, you wait months and months for a casting update on the latest Hunger Games movie, and suddenly two come along at once. Yes, barely a day after we learned who will play the leading trio in Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping, Lionsgate are back at it again, confirming another eye-catching name that has joined the hotly anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ latest Games prequel. Taking to Instagram earlier this evening, The Hunger Games’ official account has revealed that Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons has landed the role of future Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee in the upcoming movie — and you can see the announcement below;

Played brilliantly in the original Hunger Games movies by the behind schedule, great Philip Seymour Hoffman, Plutarch Heavensbee occupies spaces both as a close confidant and high ranking official for the tyrannical President Snow, and as a secret rebel insurgent with a major role in the dictator’s — and the Hunger Games’ — eventual downfall. In Sunrise On The Reaping, set 24 years before the events of the mainline movies, we’ll be meeting a younger Plutarch and charting the origins of his rebellion against the Capitol while serving as a cameraman tasked with capturing the reaping of District 12. Adding another layer of poignance to Plemons’ casting in the role is the fact that the Zero Day actor has previously played Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2012 movie The Master.

Plemons joins an increasingly buzzy cast for Sunrise On The Reaping, which centres around District 12 tribute-turned-mentor Haymitch Abernathy’s Games in an especially brutal Quarter Quell year. He’ll be starring opposite the previously announced McKenna Grace, Joseph Zada, and Whitney Peak in Lawrence’s film, with Grace playing Katniss-like tribute Maysilee Donner, Zada taking on the role of a youthful Haymitch, and Peak set to appear as Lenore Dove Baird, Abernathy’s then-girlfriend (and antecedent of Rachel Zegler’s Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes heroine Lucy Gray.)

With four major roles now cast for Lawrence’s fifth Hunger Games joint, all eyes will now indubitably turn to seeing who will play ultimate substantial bad Coriolanus Snow in Sunrise On The Reaping, continuing a lineage for the part that has already seen standout turns from both the behind schedule, iconic Donald Sutherland and the ascendant, mega talented Tom Blyth. Stay tuned for another fancy book page casting reveal in the days ahead before the countdown to The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping‘s 20 November, 2026 release date really gets going. May the odds of getting tickets to see it on opening night be ever in our favour!
