“My father never listens to Bach.” “How did you know Bach?” Blue Finch Films has posted their trailer for a superb Chinese thriller titled Brief History of a Family, arriving to watch soon. This first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival last year, with stops at the Berlin, Atlanta, Sydney, Melbourne, Zurich, and Karlovy Vary Film Festivals. After the one-child policy ends in China, a middle-class family’s fate becomes intertwined with their only son’s enigmatic up-to-date friend. Unspoken secrets begin to unravel, putting unmet expectations and untended emotions under the microscope. Charismatic Wei and tranquil Shuo become speedy friends after an accident at school. Soon Shuo is a repeated guest at the Wei’s family home, but as he embeds himself deeper into their lives, cracks begin to show. The perfect family have aged wounds and shadowy secrets that cannot stay hidden. Starring Zu Feng, Guo Keyu, Sun Xilun, and Lin Muran. The film has amazing cinematography by DP Jiahao Zhang. Highly recommend catching this film – it is an underrated indie gem.

After an incident at school, Wei, an only child and an outgoing boy from a middle-class family, and Shuo, a shy and observant classmate, form a connection that mysteriously draws them into each other’s lives. When Shuo is introduced to Wei’s parents, the couple shows great interest in the juvenile boy’s troubled past and welcomes him into their home. Gradually, Shuo begins to notice that this seemingly peaceful family life hides secrets, unmet expectations, neglected emotions. A tragic event complicates everything further, bringing past wounds and present anxieties under careful scrutiny. Brief History of a Family, also known as Jia ting jian shi or 家庭簡史 in Chinese, is written and directed by the up-and-coming Chinese filmmaker Jianjie Lin, making his feature directorial debut after a few other shrot films previously. Produced by Ying Lou, Yiwen Wang, Yue Zheng. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Blue Finch Films opens Brief History of a Family in UK cinemas on March 21st, 2025. No US release is set yet – stay tuned.
