Salaries in Hollywood are often a source of discussion and friction, and the novel Superman movie is no exception. According to a report by Puck News, Nicholas Hoult, who plays villainous Lex Luthor in the film, earned about $2 million for the movie—versus the $750,000 offered to both David Corenswet, who plays Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. As Puck notes, all three will likely earn more in the form of box-office bonuses connected to the film’s robust returns. (Vanity Fair has reached out to Warner Bros. Discovery for comment.)
The alleged difference in compensation has a straightforward explanation: unlike relative newcomer Corenswet or TV star Brosnahan, Hoult is already an established figure on the international film scene. He came very close to playing the novel Batman before Robert Pattinson got the role; he’s already had key roles in major franchises including Mad Max and the X-Men movies. It is logical, however, to expect that if things go well for this novel version of Superman, all three leads will be able to negotiate higher salaries in the event of future sequels or appearances within the DC Universe.
In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Hoult humorously recounted the experience of auditioning for Superman: “I walked out of doing one of my audition scenes, and I was like, ‘Yeah, not bad. OK,’ And I walked around the corner, and there was lots of shadows on the studio lot and then one ray of sunshine,” Hoult said. “David had taken a seat in this ray of sunshine and was sitting there, charging up from the sun like Superman does, getting his power.” Director James Gunn, meanwhile—who has called Luthor one of his “very favorite characters in the DCU”—seems to have more in mind for Lex, and the villain may return as early as the next chapter of Superman.
