“I spent all my money to make the movie…” Some of you may have heard of this film before, some of you maybe not. But now it’s screening again with a glorious 4K re-release thanks to Mubi – this interview might convince you to watch. Tarsem’s film The Fall is considered a masterpiece by some critics, a flop by others, though it is being given a chance to shine again 18 years later with this restoration.

The Film

The Fall 4K “Restored Cut” originally premiered at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival a few months ago, and just debuted streaming on Mubi. During the premiere, Letterboxd caught up with filmmaker Tarsem Singh and asked him to read some of the recent Letterboxd reviews raving about the film. The result is this extra fascinating 8-minute video where Tarsem goes on and on telling amazing stories about the film and the process and how hard it was to make & distribute. One of my favorite stories is how David Fincher & Spike Jonze agreed to put their names on it for free to help the film.

The Cast

The Fall stars Lee Pace in one of his first roles, with Catinca Untaru and Justine Waddell. It’s a vivid, entrancing, unforgettably unique cinematic experience. So glad it exists.

Availability

Mubi has debuted Tarsem’s The Fall in 4K for streaming on September 27th, 2024. You can also still grab it on BR.

About the Director

Tarsem’s epic cult classic, finally restored in 4K highlighting the breathtaking, stunning cinematography. In silent-era Hollywood, stuntman Roy Walker (Lee Pace) is brought to a hospital after an on-set accident leaves him paralyzed. There, he befriends a young girl called Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) and tells her of a fantastical tale of epic heroes trying to take revenge on an evil ruler – whilst secretly planning his own suicide.

Film Details

The Fall is directed by acclaimed Indian filmmaker Tarsem (aka Tarsem Singh), who directed this as his second feature film following The Cell (2000) and before making Immortals (2011). The screenplay is written by Dan Gilroy and Nico Soultanakis & Tarsem Singh. Based on the original 1981 film titled Yo Ho Ho written by Valery Petrov. Produced by Tarsem. This film originally opened in theaters in May 2008, after first premiering at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival and touring to other festivals throughout 2007.
