Tessa Thompson is a force to be reckoned with in the debut trailer for her latest pairing with filmmaker Nia DaCosta, Hedda. Set for a Prime Video arrival on October 29, the feature-length production serves as a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s beloved play, Hedda Gabler, and gives the original work a modernized boost. Featuring a supporting cast that includes Imogen Poots (Outer Range), Tom Bateman (Death on the Nile), Nicholas Pinnock (Long Bright River), and Nina Hoss (Tár), the teaser pulls audiences along for a twisted journey that follows one woman’s quest to escape from her stagnant life.

Starting at the end and working back, the opening moments of the Hedda trailer introduce audiences to Hedda Gabler (Thompson), a well-to-do woman who seems to have the world at her fingertips. A quick back and forth with law enforcement officials reveals that Hedda may have found herself in some scorching water, which is when the trailer turns the clock back and reveals what the woman’s life was like before the apparent accident. We see Hedda and her friends living the high life filled with glamorous parties, stunning outfits, and decadent mansions all while the titular wife does her best to entertain guests and keep up appearances. But, on the most vital night of the year for her and her husband, Hedda receives a visit from a romantic interest she thought was long left in the past who threatens to throw Hedda’s very existence into complete and utter chaos.

The Latest Project From Nia DaCosta

In addition to helming Hedda, DaCosta also penned the title and produced alongside Thompson, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Gabrielle Nadig. As mentioned, the filmmaker’s take on the classic play marks a reunion between her and Thompson, as the duo previously worked alongside one another on DaCosta’s breakout feature-length production, Little Woods. Their paths would cross once again when DaCosta took over the reins for Marvel Studios’ underappreciated female-led 2023 project, The Marvels, which saw Thompson reprise her role as Valkyrie. Beyond Hedda, audiences can keep an eye out for DaCosta’s unique vision when she leaves her mark on a beloved franchise with next year’s release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which arrives in cinemas on January 16.

Check out the debut trailer for Hedda above and watch Thompson plunge the world into chaos when the movie celebrates its Prime Video arrival on October 29.
