The early work of director Nia DaCosta has been hugely promising – most notably, her thematically-rich take on Candyman, and her bouncy, energetic Marvel outing, The Marvels. But her next film, Hedda, is her first for a while outside of franchise fare – and it looks to be a total blast. DaCosta has scripted and directed this fresh take on classic play Hedda Gabler, which by this trailer seems to be infused with considerable energy, relocated to 1950s London. Check out the trailer:
That’s a stylish and pacy first trailer – did you catch that extremely Spike Lee-esque double-dolly shot? DaCosta has Tessa Thompson in the lead here as the formidable Hedda, who looks to stir the pot in a huge way over one hedonistic night at a party where secrets and schemes threaten to come spilling out. Thompson is starring alongside Nina Hoss and Imogen Poots. Here’s the official synopsis: “Hedda (Tessa Thompson) finds herself torn between the lingering ache of a past love and the quiet suffocation of her present life. Over the course of one charged night, long-repressed desires and hidden tensions erupt — pulling her and everyone around her into a spiral of manipulation, passion, and betrayal.”
The good news is, there isn’t long to wait for Hedda to hit our screens. It comes to cinemas on 22 October, and a week later will be available to stream on Prime Video. (That’s 29 October, for anyone without a calendar.) Oh, and it’ll be screening at the BFI London Film Festival too. Here’s hoping it continues to see DaCosta rise in the wake of Candyman and The Marvels.
