The red carpet has been rolled out, the suits and gowns have been set free, and the statuettes have been shined, which can only mean one thing: Awards season is back back back! Last night, at a ceremony in Los Angeles hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, it was the 2025 Golden Globes’ turn to kick off the Hollywood festivities, offering us our first real sense of the top dogs and murky horses as the BAFTAs and Oscars inch ever nearer. And so far, Jacques Audiard’s trans mobster musical Emilia Pérez and Brady Corbet’s monumental epic The Brutalist are leading the pack, with the two movies picking up four and three gongs respectively on a night in which major contenders Anora, Conclave, and Wicked were largely relegated to the sidelines.
Among the awards Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist took home were Best Comedy or Musical, Best Non-English Language Film, Best Original Song, and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) for the former, and Best Drama, Best Actor — Drama (Adrien Brody), and Best Director (Brady Corbet) for the latter. Elsewhere, Conclave was recognised in the Screenplay race, while Wicked won the contentious Box Office Award, but the real story of the night was the realisation that there are no real givens on this year’s awards circuit. Demi Moore deservedly but unexpectedly won Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for her remarkable turn in body-horror The Substance, while Sebastian Stan and Kieran Culkin took home major awards in the male acting categories for their work in A Different Man and A Real Pain respectively; meanwhile, Fernanda Torres won Best Actress — Drama for her performance in Portuguese political drama I’m Still Here as Gints Zilbalodis’ wordless animation Flow beat out the likes of The Wild Robot and Inside Out 2 to become the first indie effort to take home the Best Animated Film Globe.
And it wasn’t just the best of the substantial screen being celebrated at last night’s showbiz bash either, as the 82nd Annual Golden Globes also handed out awards to the finest diminutive screen offerings of 2024, too. Things were a little more predictable on the TV front than film however, with feudal epic Shōgun, true-life stalker thriller Baby Reindeer, and stand-up comedy drama Hacks dominating in their nominated categories. Two of Empire‘s best TV shows of 2024, True Detective: Night Country and The Penguin, got some love too on the night, as Jodie Foster and Colin Farrell’s mercurial lead performances in both shows respectively landed top honours.
For a full rundown of the night’s substantial victors in all the major categories, keep reading on. Winners are all highlighted in bold, and that’s about all you need to know before diving in as there are a lot of awards to run through. So without further ado…
