The Buccaneers are back. The Apple TV+ costume drama’s second season is arriving this summer, and now there’s a up-to-date trailer to whet your appetite. It teases what’s to come in the season ahead, and also introduces up-to-date cast member Leighton Meester. Season two will premiere on June 18, with up-to-date episodes premiering weekly until the season finale on August 6.

To the strains of Chappell Roan‘s “Good Luck, Babe!,” the trailer showcases newly-minted Duchess Nan (Kristine Froseth), who is adjusting to her up-to-date married life with Theo (Guy Remmers). Of course, she only married Theo to protect her sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) from the cruel James (Barney Fishwick), but James is determined to hunt her down. As for Jinny, she’s pregnant and on the run with her lover, Guy (Matthew Broome), who also happens to be Nan’s ex-flame. The trailer ends with Nan’s mother Patti (Christina Hendricks) encountering a mysterious figure from her past, played by one-time Gossip Girl Meester: could she be Nan’s long-lost biological mother? The second season’s soundtrack will not only feature Roan, but also songs from Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, Clairo, Sharon Van Etten, St. Vincent, Bleachers, and The Last Dinner Party.

What Happened in Season 1 of ‘The Buccaneers’?

The Buccaneers follows two pairs of “new money” juvenile American women who relocate to 1870s England in search of romance, inspired by the marriage of their friend Conchita (Alisha Boe) to Lord Richard Marable (Josh Dylan). Nan and Jinny and their friends Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag) and Mabel Elmsworth (Josie Totah) are on the hunt for “old money” husbands; Richard’s brother James seems to be a suitable candidate, but he ultimately turns out to be a cruel cad after he and Jinny elope. Complicating Nan’s search is her discovery that she is illegitimate, making her unsuited for marriage to a member of the aristocracy. However, the kind Theo falls in love with her anyway, and marries her; that allows Nan and her friends to facilitate the pregnant Jinny escape James with Guy, Theo’s best friend, who Nan also loves. In the season finale’s closing moments, Nan and Jinny’s mother, Patti, learns that Nan’s biological mother has returned…

The Buccaneers is based on an incomplete novel by Edith Wharton (The Age of Innocence); it was published in 1938, after Wharton’s death the year before. The series was created by Katherine Jakeways; the second season will be directed by William McGregor, Rachel Leiterman, John Hardwick, and Charlie Manton.

Season 2 of The Buccaneers will premiere on Wednesday, June 18; up-to-date episodes will debut weekly until the second-season finale on August 6. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
