The past has a way of catching up, especially if it involves an accidental almost-murder that was committed and then covered up by a group of teenagers. And with that sentiment, we can finally welcome the first trailer to come for Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. It’s been nearly 30 years (kill us!) since Jim Gillespie helmed the first movie in the franchise back in 1997, and now, the hooked maniac at the center of the story is back with a vengeance, thirsty for more blood. Following in the footsteps of Scream’s reboot, the movie will feature legacy cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. mixed in with a slew of younger talent, including Madelyn Cline and Jonah Hauer-King. The trailer is giving us our first taste of the production, which is aptly due out later this year in the summer on July 18.
Vengeance has never been as bloody as it is in the debut trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer. Thought you could chill at your girlfriend’s house? Slashed. Fancy a nice, relaxing, meditative bath? Not without blood! There’s blood everywhere! We’ve got some killer throwback shots that now feature a modern group of teenagers riding in a car (presumably where the crime took place), and a sign welcoming viewers back to Southport. With the town up in arms and no teen sheltered, they’re lucky that two folks from the past are there to save them. Also, we can officially for sure say that Sarah Michelle Gellar won’t be back, with the trailer cutting to her character’s gravesite.
Robinson’s follow-up has been in the works for more than two years, slowly but surely gaining traction and heaps of support from the dedicated fandom. Its path from brainstorming session to screen has been one filled with invigorating updates, with its writer, Leah McKendrick, previously teasing that the script involved “hot people doing questionable things,” adding that she was a major fan of the original film and feels like the sequel does right by it. Now we’re seeing those hotties with today’s trailer, as a modern cast steps into the sexy shoes previously filled by the likes of Hewitt, Prinze Jr., Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe, who — for the record — are all still incredibly scorching.
Meet the Cast of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’
The folks who were excited about the reboot from gate undoubtedly already know Hewitt and Prinze Jr. for their work back in the day. The former was a longtime favorite face on TV thanks to her role in Party of Five, while the latter was one of the chiseled male faces of rom-coms like She’s All That, Down to You and Summer Catch, as well as Raja Gosnell’s live-action Scooby-Doo movies. In more recent years, Hewitt has taken on a main role in the ABC procedural series, 9-1-1, while Prinze Jr. has appeared in features like The Girl in the Pool as well as the short-lived reboot of the beloved TV series, Punky Brewster.
Filling out the new-to-the franchise cast is a list of performers that includes Cline (Outer Banks), Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), Billy Campbell (Star Trek: Prodigy), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Austin Nichols (The Walking Dead), Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies) and more.
