Nintendo may have its hands full right about now, what with the recent launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and tomorrow’s Donkey Kong Bananza release to juggle, but that doesn’t mean the legendary gaming company’s forgotten about its cinematic ambitions — not by a long shot. In fact, today has brought with it a double-dose of exhilarating news about Ninty and Sony’s upcoming The Legend Of Zelda movie, which is set to take fans to Hyrule in live-action for the very first time. First up, we now know that Renegade Nell‘s Bo Bragason and The Haunting Of Bly Manor‘s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth are set to play Zelda and Link in the movie; and secondly, we have confirmation of a modern 7 May, 2027 release date for the film. Check out Shigeru Miyamoto’s official announcement just below;
Though we still don’t know just yet what exactly director Wes Ball (Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes) and screenwriter Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) are cooking up with their take on Miyamoto’s lore-rich world of bows and Bokoblins, this seemingly in-costume first look at Bragason and Ainsworth is giving Breath Of The Wild vibes already — music to the ears of anyone with even a passing interest in the iconic franchise. And while the modern release date pushes the movie, already two years post-announcement, back by a further two months (well, almost), it’s a promising sign from both studios and filmmaker that every measure possible is being taken to make sure that The Legend Of Zelda is all Ganon breaking, no canon breaking.
With Nintendo’s last foray into the world of movies, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, having proven a hit with fans and a box office juggernaut (a sequel’s already well on the way, and a recent copyright filing has revealed Donkey Kong movie plans are in motion), the sense of anticipation — and nervousness — surrounding The Legend Of Zelda is palpable already. Here’s hoping Ball’s movie (Hy)rules and doesn’t feel too (Tri-)forced, eh? Eh? Okay, fine… back to replaying Tears Of The Kingdom we go!
