The activities of the second edition of the International Film Criticism Conference begin today in Riyadh, which will be held this year under the title “Sound in Cinema” and will continue for 5 days in the presence of many specialists and those interested in the field of film criticism around the world.

The activities of the first day of the conference will begin with a dialogue symposium with the great Saudi director Abdullah Al-Muhaisen, who is considered one of the pioneers of directing in Saudi cinema with a career extending over more than 50 years.
The symposium will be moderated by the Saudi critic Ahmed Al-Ayyad, editor-in-chief of the Fasala Cinema Platform, and the Egyptian Ahmed Shawqi, president of the International Federation of Critics (QiPress), and the activities will witness the screening of the tiny documentary film “Assassination of a City,” which is considered Al-Muhaisen’s first directorial film, which he presented in 1976. The film deals with the civil war in Lebanon, which It broke out in 1975 between different factions, and was filmed right after the war began in Beirut, as the city was in danger.
Despite the risk involved in traveling there, the diversity of shots and the abundance of images taken from the heart of the event give the film its essential documentary value, and make it a living record that reveals the ugliness of the war. It was shown at the opening ceremony of the second session of the Cairo International Film Festival in 1977, and won. The film won the Silver Nefertiti Award for Best Outstanding Short Film.

The “Criticism Conference” aims to exchange experiences and enhance national, regional and international participation in enriching film criticism as it is a fundamental axis in the film industry. During the modern version, it focuses on a variety of innovative topics, as it presents dialogue sessions that address critical issues in depth, the concept of sound in cinema. Cinema and its impact on the viewer’s experience, in addition to presentations that address up-to-date critical insights and groundbreaking approaches to film criticism.
The conference includes interactive workshops to expand the perspective on the field of sound in cinema and develop the skills of criticism and analysis, in addition to selected cinematic screenings followed by discussions in the “Critics Corner”, with musical evenings that enrich the cinematic experience from an auditory aspect, in addition to an art exhibition presenting multimedia works.
The conference also includes a corner dedicated to children and families, which contains an educational cultural program aimed at introducing younger generations to aspects of film criticism and the elements of sound in films, which contributes to enhancing film culture in an interactive and educational way. This year’s forum comes as the conclusion of the series of film criticism forums organized by the Film Commission in The cities of Hail and Al-Ahsa are part of their efforts to support and enhance the cinematic movement in the Kingdom and the region, create platforms that bring together creators and pioneers with amateurs and those interested, and develop cinematic culture in the region.
