Richard Osman is something of a national treasure. For years, he nerded it up on Pointless. He made House Of Games, for people who thrive on Only Connect, but who also like fun. And more recently, he’s become a mega smash-hit author, particularly with his Thursday Murder Club novels – in which a group of OAPs get solving cool cases (and balmy ones too) in and around their care home. Now, the first novel in the series gets a starry film adaptation on Netflix, from director Chris Columbus – with a stellar cast stepping into the roles that fans of the books have come to love. Check out the trailer here.
Well, that looks like a very good time at the sofa-plex. The adaptation stars Pierce Brosnan as former union leader Ron, Helen Mirren as retired spy Elizabeth, and Ben Kingsley as former psychiatrist Ibrahim – with Celia Imrie’s nurse Joyce entering their ranks. Elsewhere, the cast also includes David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomie Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Mays. It’s a real who’s-who of the British actor scene. Columbus penned the screenplay alongside comedian Katy Brand, and comes with the backing of a certain Steven Spielberg. Yes, this is an Amblin production, so the ‘berg is on producer duties.
Will The Thursday Murder Club live up to the popularity of the novel? Is Netflix hastily prepping follow-up The Man Who Died Twice for the screen too? Will ‘actors who appeared in The Thursday Murder Club’ ever be a round on Pointless? Only time will tell. The film comes to Netflix on 28 August.
